Oh, Canada! The land of maple syrup, hockey, and now, the thrilling return of the World Poker Tour® Montreal Championship Festival. As a passionate poker player hailing from the Great White North, the announcement that the WPT is adding a dash of Canadian flair to its 2024 schedule is like hearing the dealer shout, “Shuffle up and deal!” at my very own kitchen table.
Imagine this: a 14-day poker extravaganza set against the backdrop of Montreal’s premier poker destination.
We’re talking about three Championship events, with a combined guaranteed prize pool of a whopping $3,500,000 CAD. The headliner? The WPT Montreal Championship, boasting a $2,000,000 CAD prize pool all by itself. The buy-in? A cool $3,500 CAD. The dates? Circle May 16-20 on your calendars, folks.
But wait, there’s more.
The festival kicks off on May 9 and runs until May 22, promising non-stop action and heart-pounding moments. Playground CEO Phil Sabbah couldn’t contain his excitement, reminiscing about the venue’s history of monumental poker moments. From crowning the first female champion in a WPT open event to witnessing poker legend Mike Sexton clinch his first WPT Championship, Playground has seen it all. And this May, we’re all invited to be part of the magic.
Adding to the allure, the festival will feature the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup and introduce the WPT Prime Cup, with the WPT Prime Montreal Championship event running from May 12-17. This event alone promises a $1,000,000 CAD guarantee for a $1,150 CAD buy-in. And let’s not forget the televised final tables on May 21 and 22, which will also be livestreamed for those of us who can’t make it in person.
For someone like me, who lives and breathes poker, the return of the WPT to Montreal is more than just a series of tournaments; it’s a celebration of the game we adore. It’s a chance to sit down with legends, make new friends, and maybe, just maybe, etch our names alongside the greats in the WPT history books.
As the last WPT Montreal event in 2019 left us with unforgettable memories and a Canadian, Geoffrey Hum, walking away with his first WPT title and a hefty $500,000 CAD, the anticipation for this year’s festival is sky-high. Will we witness another Canadian rising to the occasion, or will an international player steal the spotlight? Only time will tell.
So, to my fellow poker enthusiasts, sharpen your skills, polish your poker faces, and get ready for an unforgettable journey to the heart of Canadian poker. The WPT Montreal Championship Festival is not just a tournament; it’s where dreams can come true, and poker legends are born. See you at the tables!
